Why Some Low-Cost Flights to Spain Might Not End Up Low Cost

How do you magically massively increase the advertised cost of a return trip to Spain? Easy! Low-cost airlines have the very irritating habit of adding on ‘extras’ that are simply unavoidable, and have to be paid. An example. Ryanair are well known for their low-cost flights to Spain. For a return trip from a British airport to Alicante in September their advertised fare shown on their website was £96.72. Not bad at all. But, in addition to that price there are the dreaded extras. They are as follows- Administration fee for paying by debit card online is £12, which is £6 per journey. Cost of web check-in a further £12, again £6 each way journey. Add to that anyone wishing to take luggage up to 15kgs a further £35. Thus, the extras add up to £59, or 61 per cent on top of the original £96.72, grand total now £155.72. I find that amazing.
