I’ve traveled extensively during my career. It’s made me aware of the many differences at the airports that I’ve flown through. Some of them are wonderful and even resemble shopping malls in many ways with lots of stores to check out and fantastic eating establishments. Other airports are claustrophobic and only make you want to get out of them. I prefer the airports that have hotels on the property, such as the SFO Airport Hotel. I can spend the night, enjoy the are and be on time for a morning flight.
My fraternity brothers and I hired a Detroit Bus Rental to take us on a tour of famous sports venues. First we went to Comerica Park on Woodward Ave which became the home of the Detroit Tigers in 2000. Comerica Park replaced the historic Tiger Stadium as the home for the Major League Baseball team. It has a theme park and a baseball museum on the property. The park hosts concerts by great recording artists like Paul McCartney, Bon Jovi, Bruce Springsteen and the Rolling Stones!
I decided to check out the San Francisco Airport Hotel my friend told me about to see if it is convenient for some of the places I want to visit while I am there. I did a search for hotels san diego california and came up with one that I think is going to give my wife and I the best time. England has a rich history and it is evident in many of the buildings. Many of these buildings were initially constructed as Warehouse storage in Manchester facilities and were later converted into businesses or historic sites. Here are just a few of them.
History of the Warehouses
Since the 17th century one of the most popular trading commodities in England was textiles. It started first with wool and later weaving as more settlers entered into England. By the 1800’s, during the Industrial Revolution, the textile market was booming and trade routes were well established. It became necessary to construct enough warehouses for the storage of the textiles.
The textile revolution coincided with the rapid manufacturing and progress of transport. Steam engine coaches became popular transport for both passengers and cargos of coal and other goods. A network of canals was constructed with warehouses at strategic point to store the coal and other goods to be transported. Before long England became a trading centre with Manchester as one of the largest transport networks in the United Kingdom with warehouse storage arising everywhere.
Warehouses Still In Use
Many of the warehouse storage in Manchester facilities became redundant as the modern era progressed and technology advanced. To preserve the industrial history of the UK, many of the warehouses was declared Grade II listed buildings and converted into other businesses. A Grade II building is a statutory building of special architectural or historic interest.
The Watts Warehouse is located on Portland Street in the Manchester city centre and operated as a textile warehouse for business of S&J Watts that did wholesale drapery. The building dates back to 1851 and today it is trading as a hotel that is part of the Britannia Hotel group. This building also houses the war memorial known as the Sentry, erected to commemorate the lives lost of employees of S&J Watts during the First World War.
The Dale Street Warehouse was constructed in the early 1800’s and was used for storage to and from the warehouse, situated above the network canals for easy storage and collection. It is the earliest surviving warehouse serving the canals in Manchester. To preserve the history of the building, it is now an office block with a cafe. It is now known as Carver’s Warehouse.
Portland Street consisted almost entirely of warehouses, but many of these buildings were damaged severely during World War II. A few remained and now trade mostly as hotels and office building. The first three buildings in Portland Street are now hotels and the fourth one an office block.
Another street with great architectural value, is Princess Street, now housing the Princess Hotel which was once a warehouse with such an intriguing gothic design, it looked more like a hotel from the start than a warehouse.
